Haunted Windchimes

Out of Colorado, comes a traditional folk roots music group called the Haunted Windchimes. This group is very interesting. They capture Haunted Wind Chimes2an old timey sound with their simple arrangements and haunting melodies, but the songs are brand new. Hmmm, I wonder, could I have uncovered the secret of why they named their band in such a manner? A wind chime, according to Webster, is defined as an arrangement of metal, glass or shell pieces suspended by strings that create a pleasing bell like sound when subjected to a breeze. Similarly, the Haunted Windchimes could be defined as an arrangement of 5 unique individuals joined together with strings and close harmonies, creating a pleasing sound that is soulful and yes, haunting. Who are they? Desirae Garcia is on ukulele, Chela Lujan on banjo, Inaiah Lujan on guitar, Mike Clark on harmonica, guitar, and mandolin, and Sean Fanning on standup bass. As near as we can tell, they have a total of 4 albums including their latest called “Out With The Crow”. Check it out. The Haunted Windchimes will be performing in the Wichita area, home base for Mike and the Ranger, on June 6th at the Cotillion. http://inaiahlujan.com

Balsam Range’s new album, “Five”

You’d might suspect that a band with the accolades and awards that they have earned in such a short

time may have ran its course. Not so with Balsam Range. Their previous bluegrass blockbuster album

“Papertown” topped the charts for months.

Well no fear, Balsam Range is ready to treat Balsam

balsalm_range-256-1024x773Nation with another album of fine harmony, interesting themes, and solid instrumentation called

“Five” due for release June 17th. Some tunes of note include their treatment of the John Denver

classic “Mathew”, while at the same time laying down some solid bluegrass and tight harmony in a

tune entitled “Don’t Watch These Tears”. Much that will please, from another fine album by Balsam

Range. Members include Tim Surrett, Buddy Melton, Caleb Smith, Darren Nicholson, and Marc Pruett.

Darrell Webb, Dream Big

“Dream Big” is out. This album highlights Darrell Webb’s 20 years of being at the forefront of Bluegrass Music with an all start cast including Rhonda Vincent, members of Blue Highway, members of The Grascals, Sammy Shelor, Ronnie Bowman, Tim Stafford, Jason Burleson, Shawn Lane, Rob Ickes, Jason Moore, Aaron Ramsey, Jamie Johnson, Darrin Vincent, Jamie Dailey, Jim VanCleve, Terry Eldredge, Phil Leadbetter, Chris Wade, Jeremy Arrowood, Brandon Green, Jake Joines, and Jared Hensley.

Darrell_MB_casualHe’s been busy over his 20 years, with Grammy Award Nominations, IBMA awards, Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America honors and doing a multitude of projects with Dolly Parton, Marty Raybon, Bobby Hicks and the queen herself, Rhonda Vincent. I first met Darrell while a new member of the Lonesome River Band. He was just a teenager, but he didn’t miss a beat and had integrated himself into the classic Lonesome River Band sound at the get-go. Recommended cuts on ‘Dream Big”, include “More Life”, a touching song about growing old. “Hummingbird” also got my attention, primarily because of the killer opening and the drive. It’s all good. “Dream Big” out now and predictably on the national bluegrass charts very soon. www.mountainfever.com

We could not find anything approved yet for release off the new album but there’s plenty of Darrell’s work out there.

Enjoy!

Breaking Grass, “Raining in Virginia”

Here’s a band to watch. They’re out of the great State of Mississippi and their name is Breaking Grass. They just released the title single from their new upcoming album called “Raining in Virginia”, which we’ve just started playing on Bluegrass and More, with Mike and the Ranger.

The album, which is number 3 for the boys, is supposed to be chock full of original material. I first got introduced to Breaking Grassthe band through their second project “Running With the Moon”. It was fresh and hard driving, so I’m betting this next one will be even better. Band members include Cody Farrar on guitar; Tyler White on fiddle; Thelton Vanderford on banjo; Zach Wooten on mandolin; and Britt Sheffield on bass. I do have one question. Since the band is based out of Mississippi, why didn’t they title it “Raining in Mississippi”? Probably, there’s some unwritten bluegrass law that says if you write bluegrass tunes, you have to have one at least about Virginia. Nonetheless, watch for the album “Raining in Virginia” by ”Breaking Grass” due for release early this Summer on the Mountain Fever Record label.

Bryan Sutton “Into My Own”

I am really impressed with the latest project by Bryan Sutton called “Into My Own”, which is his fourth album for Sugar Hill Records. On Mike and the Ranger, we liked it so much, we featured not one, but several of the cuts on our show. bryansuttonBluegrass and More. This crazy good guitar player shows something we have not seen or at least publicly heard before. He can sing! When I first listened to the tunes on this new album, I was immediately reminded of other Bluegrass Guitar greats who became known for not only their special touch on the guitar, but how well they delivered vocally. I think of Tony Rice, Dan Crary, but especially of Norman Blake and Doc Watson. Listen to “That’s Where I Belong” and see if you don’t agree. Some high profile pickers of course helping out, like Noam Pikelny and Rob McCoury on banjo, Jason Carter, Stuart Duncan and Luke Bulla on fiddle, Ronnie McCoury and Sam Bush on mandolin, with Greg Garrison, Alan Bartram and Dennis Crouch on bass. It’s worth it, get it, you’ll like it.
